Sergio Manetti, founder of Montevertine in Chianti Classico's medieval town of Radda. Manetti arrived to this cooler zone of the Chianti region in 1967 and immediately planted two hectares of vineyards, making sure to only plant Sangiovese. This was in response to Manetti's adamance that white grapes had no part in being blended with Sangiovese and that the grape needed no assistance from indigenous red grapes Canaiolo and Colorino. This year marks fifty since the first 'Pergole Torte' bottling and it is one of not just Tuscany but all of Italy's most consistent and evocative wines. A truly memorable wine and artistic expression of Sangiovese's potential which is fittingly adorned with artist Alberto Manfredi's customized labels.
